Senator Garcia Files SB 250 to Address Discrimination of Same-Sex Parents

Austin, TX – Senator Sylvia Garcia (SD-6) filed SB 250 today which will allow adopted children of same-sex parents to obtain a supplementary birth certificate with both parents' names.  Current Texas law restricts the parents named on the supplementary birth certificate of an adopted child to one female parent and one male parent.  Representative Rafael Anchia (HD-103) also filed the companion bill, HB 537, today.

"This bill removes an unreasonable obstacle to some children getting the important legal documentation they need.  A birth certificate is vital and should accurately reflect both parents.  Neither these children nor their parents should be burdened with an incomplete birth certificate omitting a loving parent."

"Same-sex couples are legally entitled to adopt children and provide them with a caring, nurturing home.  This legislation eliminates the discriminatory restriction on recognizing both of the loving parents on their children's supplementary birth certificate."

Senator Garcia proudly represents Texas Senate District 6. Senator Garcia previously held office as Houston City Controller from 1998-2002 and County Commissioner from 2002-2010.
