SENATOR GARCIA COMMENTS ON REPORT HIGHLIGHTING REDUCTION IN ABORTION RATE
AUSTIN – Today, Senator Sylvia Garcia (D- Houston) responded to a report by the Texas Policy Evaluation Project, which found that the abortion rate in Texas has declined by 13%. The report also states that unintended pregnancies due to lack of access to reproductive care is also on the rise. Senator Garcia said the following:
“This report confirms that HB 2 has created a lack of access to reproductive care, including, but not limited toabortion.
The report highlights that all clinics south of San Antonio have closed and only one in West Texas remains open following passage of this restrictive legislation. Of course the result of this bill is a reduction in the abortion rate, but it’s also causing a reduction in access to contraception, a likely increase in illegal and dangerous abortions, and most disturbingly, barriers to reproductive health care. What we don’t yet know is how acutely the closures of these clinics will impact women’s access to mammograms, pap smears, and well-women checks that are vital for early detection and prevention of cancer.
Nobody ever wants an abortion, and we all want to see the abortion rate decrease; but I want to see the rate decrease as a result of responsible, sound policy, that gives women contraception options and educated choices about their health, not a draconian policy that simply takes away their right to choose.”
