Hello [firstname],

March was a busy month for me. Here are a few highlights:

Turn-out was better than expected for the March Primary, and we sailed through with no opposition in the Democratic Party. The real challenge lies ahead in November as we do have an opponent.. I love my job and I want to keep it. With your help, we can do it. Email me or visit our  website to get involved!

On March 4th, I hosted our second Town Hall Meeting of the year, keeping with my biennial tradition of hosting a series of town hall meetings. We had a packed room, with over 300 neighbours in attendance. These meetings provide opportunities for residents to ask questions, offer solutions and learn more about their county government. I welcome the chance to bring decision makers and department heads together with the taxpayer. Visit my calendar to find a Town Hall near you.

Progress continues to be made in the Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative program that I co-chair. We opened the first Evening Reporting Center which is an alternative to having our children placed in detention. I also attended a site visit in Albuquerque, New Mexico to see first-hand what are the best practices for monitoring our youth ensuring that they show up to court and more importantly that they do not re-offend.

Fighting to protect our jobs, I traveled to Washington D.C. to deliver a Commissioners Court resolution in support of full funding of NASA’s human space flight program. The Johnson Space Center could lose as many as 7,000 jobs if the Constellation program is cut. The Space Center is a vital part of Harris County and we need to keep America in place as the world leader in space exploration. Join GoBoldly on Facebook now or visit for more information.

Building a strong foundation for the future, I take every opportunity I can to visit with kids around the precinct. This month included participating in the Reading for America program at Woodland Acres Elementary School and visiting with kids at the SPARK Park dedication at Mytthys Elementary  in South Houston.

The Census is vitally important to all of us. Over the last month, I have been working hard to make sure we are all counted. I participated in a press conference with state and local officials to discuss the importance of a fair and accurate census count, led a Houston Be Counted Expo where residents can obtain in-language assistance for filling out their census forms, mailed out reminders to everyone in my precinct, aired two Public Service Announcements on TV, wrote an Op-Ed (read here) and guest starred with Mayor Parker on Houston 8, "The Census and You - How Your Answers Affect Our Future." Watch now!

As your County Commissioner, I am asking each of you to participate in this year's census.  YOU count, now be counted! Your voice is imperative if we want a better future.  New hospitals, schools, job training centers, parks, libraries, roads, community programs and more could become realities. So, be counted!
